I'm delighted to share the cover art for my new book The Nine Lives of Jacob Fallada. This is one of the most satisfying moments for any writer - when you receive the cover art - because it makes the whole publishing process real. This is actually happening. In a few weeks, people can read and hopefully enjoy the product of your imagination. It isn't some crazy dream or conceited delusion, a long-neglected file gathering virtual cyber dust on your computer's hard-drive.
I'm an actual, real, living, breathing writer!
And if you'd received half as many rejection slips as I have over the years then you'll know how special that moment is. Breath. Savour. Get drunk. Then start something new!
But back to the cover.
When in-house designer (the very talented Liana Moisescu) sent me the her draft ideas, I was immediately put in mind of a favourite old book cover of mine, a Penguin Classic, Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. This particular book has a special place in my heart. I bought it for the princely sum of £1 about twenty years ago. Ever since then, it's a novel I've returned to time and again, and never ceased to be overwhelmed by the intoxicating nature of the story. Maybe, in a roundabout way, there are similarities between Raskolnikov and Jacob Fallada. As both men are individuals to whom life has sought to crush underfoot.
I'm hugely excited to be working with J.New Books, a publisher dedicated to literary fiction, quality writing that is so often ignored or sadly neglected today.
The book will be released on the 20th of August. Watch this space for all pre-order information and details of upcoming events:
